Think Different

I remember I did a presentation about Apple’s computer back in collage when I studied some public speaking course. It was the time when Apple has just released iBook and revised the candy iMac. My speech was about why you should pick a Mac over PC. (hm… typical fan boy saying) I presented a few things like ease of use, virus free, etc. And, in the end of my speech, I remember very clearly, I explained why Apple uses “Think Different” in their campaign. Back then, my concluding statement was “We are not saying using PC is wrong. But think different. There is a better world out there”. That was the good old days… (miss collage life)

Lately, people are rumoring that Apple is resurrecting the “Think Different” campaign. Seriously, the “Think Different” slogan means a lot to me.

With the success of iPod and iPhone in the past 5 years or so, the Apple community is enjoying exponential growth. Many developers and companies come to this platform for money and tag alone Apple’s fame. I am not sure how many of them really understand the culture and passion we have.

To me, Apple first strikes me with the design of the original iMac. (i must admit i am a shallow person. i like eye candy :P )

When I worked on that presentation assignment, it was my first time researching the timeline of Macintosh and other Apple products, checking out their sites, ads and marketing materials… Back then, there are many skepticism whether Steve can resurrect the company. But when I read articles from fans why and how much their like their “Think Different” campaign…. This is when I truly understand the culture.

It’s better that I leave it to Steve Jobs himself to explain why….

Check out the video from the 36th minute of the video where Steve Jobs began his “think different” pitch… To conclude his speech, he goes, “… i think people who buy them do think differently. They are the creative spirits in this world. They are people who are out to get their jobs done. They are out to change the world. And they are out to get whatever great tools they can get. And we make tools for those kind of people…. And serve the people that have been buying our products since the beginning. Because a lot of times people think they are crazy. But in their craziness, we see genius. And those are the people we are making the tools for….”
