NYTimes on iPhone camera apps
Bringing Big Smiles to iPhone Shutterbugs
I cannot imagine there are more than 2000 camera apps in App Store. Come on! Two Thousand! Two thousand apps which, essentially, do the same thing – taking freaking pictures!
I had some ideas doing camera app. After reading the article, I am giving it up. I am just not go at racing with other developers.
Looking it from a positive perspective, 2000 apps doing slightly difference but, essentially, the same thing means… there’s hugh demand of such app. But two thousand is quite scaring number. I don’t think there are more than two thousand different model of digital cameras available in the market for sales. To me, two thousand means the market is very much saturated.
There’s just no fun working on an app which you have to race with 2000 competitors to release new features. Imagine waking up every day checking how other competitors are doing and hope that your app still has some niche feature to differentiate it from competitors. You also have to stress yourself to deliver new features first and early.
Hm… actually, I’ll be out developing Headnix own iPhone product for a few months in order to focus on development of some new Mac apps. Mac OS X is just 9869237492 times more exciting than iPhone OS in terms of market freedom and software technologies.
